Steve Griffiths

Steve was born in Manchester and studied music at the universities of York and Sheffield. His first operatic roles were Antonio (The Marriage of Figaro) and Sergeant Budd (Albert Herring), both in Oxford during the 1980s. As head of music at Fulford School in York since 1988, he has composed and directed the music for two original productions, in addition to directing orchestras, bands and choirs. Steve began studying with Michael de Costa in 2002 and has sung in many concerts in the York area. His first appearance with York Opera came with Hobson (Peter Grimes). His operatic roles in the past six years have included Don Pedro (Beatrice & Benedict), Zuniga (Carmen) and Mr Page (The Merry Wives of Windsor) with West Riding Opera; together with the title role in The Mikado, Belcore (The Elixir of Love), Leporello (Don Giovanni concert version), the Constable (Hugh the Drover), Sarastro (The Magic Flute), Banquo (Macbeth) and Falstaff (The Merry Wives of Windsor) for York Opera. Steve was also Musical Director for our production of The Beggar's Opera in May 2008.
